A complex social system it inter-relates an automated machine system with a human labor system in such as way as to produce goods. This inter-relationship manifests a multiplicity of feedback loops that bound the activity of people integrated as a collective; so that goals can be achieved that would not be possible for people acting independently. Labor then becomes defined in terms of machine performance measures (such as speed and number of circles turned) and is consequently tied to interests, or stake, intrinsically opposed to the personal interests of the worker. The Industrial Revolution began slowly, but when it did pick up momentum, there was nothing to stop it. By the 1850s, this rapid change started to bear its harsh consequences. Industrialization had a far-reaching impact not only on industry and wealth but also upon society in general. Early literature was largely concerned with the moral dangers and infrastructural failures of cities that were forced to grow too quickly. The Industrial Revolution was a period in Great Britain’s history best seen in two parts. The first visible change was the increased ‘intellectual’ wealth brought from the enlightened Age of Reason, colonial ascendancy, and the access to raw materials. The second part, brought on by the earlier changes, was an unprecedented sudden growth of industry and machinery, ‘material wealth,’ as well as the poverty and dangers that accompanied it.
